stfuracists: (submitted by haleysunshine via stuffwhitepeopledo) Some examples which might jog your memory: As I walked around in several stores today, I never felt self-conscious about my race. I never felt outnumbered by people of a different race. As I drove down the highway at my usual ten miles per hour over the speed limit, I never worried that my race could make me a more likely...

A very modest proposal to improve our governance.
blissandzen: What say we make it a requirement that before anyone is allowed to file as a candidate for any elected office, they must first prove themselves competent citizens, by passing the same written test that any and all immigrants are required to pass before they are allowed to become citizens. It seems perfectly fair. Yes, please.

How Much Do College Students Learn, and Study? →
caraobrien: gregleding: From The New York Times: In the book, and in an accompanying study being released Tuesday, the authors followed more than 2,300 undergraduates at two dozen universities, and concluded that 45 percent “demonstrated no significant gains in critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and written communications during the first two years of college.” The universities are not...

How Much Do College Students Learn, and Study? →
kohenari: The New York Times, this morning, has a brief introduction to a new study about college education and, in particular, about whether students are actually learning anything when they attend. The authors of “Academically Adrift” — Richard Arum, a professor of sociology and education at New York University, and Josipa Roksa, a professor of sociology at the University of Virginia — also...

You Don't Owe Anyone A Kidney Or A Pregnancy
stfuantichoicers: In this country we’re not obligated to give family members a kidney should they need them, and that’s very right.  I would say that our lack of obligation to give someone a kidney translates very well into a pro-choice argument.  We are not obligated to perserve life at detriment to our own, we are not obligated to go through surgery for another person, and thus we should not...

Dear Anti-choice people,
stfuantichoicers: You like to refute the pro-choice argument that contraception prevents abortion by pointing out that an increase in contraceptive usage often correlates with an increase in performed abortions. And you know what? You’re not wrong that the two are related.  When a study finds that more women are using contraception, it means that more women are having sex that we do not wish to...

malefeminist: There are many reasons, all previously mentioned, for why I will not sit through or in any way financially support this new rom-com with Portman and Kutcher, but the most infuriating was this moment in the broadcast trailer: supporting dude-bro tells leading dude-bro not to worry because “in ten… THANK YOU! David Brock Explains to Chris Matthews That Beck...
DAVID BROCK: But this is not street theater, as you know.
Glenn Beck himself has been responsible for three thwarted assassination attempts this year. And Sarah Palin --
CHRIS MATTHEWS: How is he responsible for them?
BROCK: Well, you want to know what they are?
MATTHEWS: You said it.
BROCK: Sure.
So, he burned Nancy Pelosi in effigy on his set. He tried to poison her with a chalice. OK. Some three weeks later, somebody tried to firebomb Nancy Pelosi`s house. That guy`s mother went on television and said he gets all his ideas from FOX News.
Do you know about Senator Patty Murray and the death threat that she got?
MATTHEWS: No. Go ahead.
BROCK: OK. It`s recorded. The guy says after the health care vote, he says, you have a target on your back and I can accomplish what I want to accomplish with one bullet.
He`s tried, convicted, and in the sentencing phase, his cousin writes in for leniency and she describes in a very chilling memo -- it`s on our Web site -- that he was slowly drawn into Glenn Beck`s world. And she portrays the guy, the attempted assassin, Charlie Wilson, as a victim of Beck.
And, number three, which you probably do know about, this liberal foundation in San Francisco was targeted by a gunman, Byron Williams, in June. The shooter gave jailhouse interviews -- and we published them -- and he says Glenn Beck is a schoolteacher on television and points to specific episodes of the Glenn Becks show that inspired him to do it.
MATTHEWS: Oh, God.
